With the Guardians of the Galaxy all but certain to become Marvel's latest screen superstars, talk about them meeting up with that other superhero team has already begun.
Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn and some of the members of the cast were asked by Yahoo! UK about the possibility of the Guardians crossing paths -- and eventually joining forces -- with the Avengers. Gunn replied that he already knows the general plan for how that will happen, although it might not involve the full teams:
"We talked about all sorts of possibilities (for a crossover) and I kind of know what the basic plan is. That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they’re pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other."
Since both teams are going to share a common foe -- Thanos (Josh Brolin), who appeared in The Avengers and who shows up in Guardians of the Galaxy -- creating a unified front against the Mad Titan might be the only way to stop him. Vin Diesel (Groot) agreed:
"I think there’s going to be huge fans of the Guardians and there are huge fans of the Avengers and I think the discussion has already been had. I think the audience may demand something like that."
The only holdout appeared to be Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), who seems to think that exploring even more new characters instead of teaming the established ones is the way to go:
"If you go from five characters and you add another five characters, that’s ten characters. That can be very difficult. That being said, Marvel knows their stuff, knows their business. And I see this, rather than taking the worlds that already exist and putting them together, this opens up doors into brand new worlds. We take characters we didn’t even know existed in the four corners of the universe and we see their stories."
With Avengers: Age of Ultron on the way next May and Guardians of the Galaxy opening tonight (and the sequel already confirmed for July 2017), we're fairly certain that more of Marvel's grand scheme will come into focus going forward. Do you think an Avengers/Guardians crossover is inevitable? Is that something you want to see?
