Look who Evangeline Lilly is really playing in Ant-Man + the fate of Janet Van Dyne revealed!

Despite SDCC reports that Evangeline Lilly was playing Hope Van Dyne in Ant-Man, Marvel has now revealed that she’ll be playing another character.

The former Lost actress is actually playing Hope Pym, a character who is better known as “Red Queen” in the MC2 alternate universe, and NOT Hope Van Dyne, as was previously reported during the Marvel panel.

She's Hank and Janet Pym’s daughter, has a twin brother called Henry and eventually becomes the villainous Red Queen following the deaths of her parents -- for which she blames Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Here’s the official Marvel Studios Press Release:

Evangeline Lilly and Corey Stoll have found their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the female lead and antagonist, respectively, in Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” in theaters July 17, 2015!

Lilly will play Hope Pym, the daughter of Hank Pym, while Stoll will play Darren Cross, a.k.a. Yellowjacket, the antagonist of the film. The two join stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang) and Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), along with director Peyton Reed, for the size-changing super hero’s first cinematic adventure.

“We’ve been fans of Evangeline for years, and couldn’t be more pleased that she’s agreed to join us on Ant-Man’s journey to the big screen,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We look forward to audiences learning more about her character when she joins forces with Hank Pym and Scott Lang in 2015.

"Corey brings depth to every role he plays,” continued Feige. “As a major part of the Ant-Man ensemble, we all wanted an actor who could be both cunning and sympathetic, and help create a character as dynamic as Marvel's best antagonists."

As for the fate of Hope Pym’s mother, Janet Van Dyne -- aka the original the Wasp -- actor Michael Douglas revealed that she is indeed in the movie but dies in some sort of accident.

Here's what Douglas had to say in an Entertainment Weekly interview during this week-end's San Diego Comic-Con:

“My name is Dr. Henry Pym. I’m an entomologist. I’m also a physicist and I discovered in 1963, a way, a serum to reduce a human being to the size of ant maintaining the strength. Not only that, but I was able to find a way to communicate with the ants. But unfortunately during this process, a tragic personal accident happened with my wife, my daughter, Evangeline, Hope. So I’ve had to pass my powers and strengths onto a mentor.”

That person is, of course, Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd. Douglas added:

“Because my partner, my partner, Corey over there, f–ked me good. Darren Cross, my partner, my mentor, my nemesis, has taken my company and taken it in a different direction. I need help, I desperately need help. I need someone who’s a master thief, someone with a brilliant mind, and somebody who can pull off a really great heist.”
