Supernatural producer on Demon Dean, new female characters and ... a musical?

The cast and crew of The CW’s long-running series Supernatural were out in force at the final day of Comic-Con, and they had a lot to say about season 10. The weirdest bit: There’s (kinda) going to be a musical.

Yeah, that’s right — a musical. If it were any other show, you’d say they were getting ready to jump the shark, but this is the series that’s already tackled everything from sitcom tropes to going so meta it practically redefines the term. So, heck, why not?

Believe it or not, season 10 will include Supernatural’s 200th episode, which producer Jeremy Carver teases will have “musical-ish elements” and serve as a “love letter to the fans.” But that’s not all. We’ll also get some musical fun in the season premiere, because as co-star Jensen Ackles notes, ”Demon Dean likes to karaoke.” Hmm.

There’s also the matter of that shocking finale from last season to deal with, and Carver said the Demon Dean storyline will be a major driver for this next year. The more we hear about it, the more curious we are to see where they take this. It sounds like Ackles is also having a lot of fun playing with this side of his character, and here’s what the two had to say about the arc:

Carver: “It has an enormous effect on the season and the brothers. The boys, Sam in particular, will really dig into how to rescue his brother from being a demon while Dean struggles with what it means to be a demon. We're really excited, most of all, with the brothers questioning who's the real monster. It's exciting, moving, very emotional and fun."

Ackles: “A lot of times on our show we have demons possessing a meat suit, which is lovingly what we call it on this show. This is not like that. This is actually Dean's soul that is twisted. It was interesting trying to make it the same character but a different character, just twisted and demonic.”

It also seems like we shouldn’t expect Crowley (Mark Sheppard) and Demon Dean (Ackles) to be the best of pals, despite the fact that they’re both skewing evil at this point. Plus, Dean’s always been a but unpredictable as a lowly human — so just imagine how he’ll be as a demon:

Sheppard: “I think nobody's ever going to believe that Crowley didn't know what was going to happen, right? So we'll have to see if Crowley has any control over what happens or if Crowley's even in charge. We'll have to see.”

Ackles: “With Demon Dean, at some point Crowley is going to be like, 'This was a bad, bad idea.’”

Other tidbits of note: Kevin Tran himself, aka Osric Chau, popped up in the Q&A to ask when Kevin is coming back, which got some laughs; and Carver promised a “healthy dose” of strong new female characters this season.

Season 10 of Supernatural premieres Tuesday, Oct. 7, on The CW.
