Harlan Ellison's 'lost episode' of Batman '66 gets new life as a DC comic

If you're a Batman '66 fan, you're in for a lot of fun this fall.

Earlier this month we got the long-awaited news that the camp classic Batman TV series of the 1960s, starring Adam West and Burt Ward, will finally get a full home video release this fall. West, Ward and company have been making the rounds at Comic-Con this week to tease the special features of the release, and we can't wait for the series to hit shelves in November so we can snatch it up. For fans who've waited for decades to own the complete series, that might be enough good news, but there's more Batman '66 goodness on the horizon.

The digital division of DC Comics announced at Comic-Con Thursday that one of their upcoming projects will be Batman '66: The Lost Episode, an adaptation of an unproduced story for the original TV series, written by none other than sci-fi legend Harlan Ellison, that would have introduced Harvey "Two-Face" Dent as a new villain for the show. That's exciting enough by itself, but that's not the end of the good news. The comic adaptation of Ellison's story will be scripted by comics legend Len Wein (co-creator of Wolverine, Swamp Thing, Storm and other comic-book icons), but even that's not all the good news.

The story will be drawn by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, a legendary DC Comics artist who's produced influential work on everything from Superman to Deadman to The New Teen Titans and is widely considered one of the greatest comics artists of all time. We haven't seen any major promotional art from Garcia-Lopez for the series yet (though DC did unveil some during the panel announcing the project), but some of his previously existing Batman '66 sketches (via ComicsAlliance) are featured in the image above.

DC Digital hit a home run last summer when they launched the still-ongoing (and still very entertaining) Batman '66 digital series from writer Jeff Parker and artist Jonathan Case (the series has since passed on to other creative teams) and got our attention again when they launched Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet from writers Ralph Garman and Kevin Smith and artist Ty Templeton earlier this year. Now they've gathered a couple of comics legends to adapt a long-dormant story from a genre storytelling giant, and we can't wait.

Batman '66: The Lost Episode will arrive in November, so you'll be able to enjoy your new Batman box set and a new Batman '66 adventure in the same month.
