Don't call her She-Thor - Marvel announces a woman will be the new Thor

Thor won't be cut out to hold Mjolnir much longer, and *gasp* some lady is gonna take it for her own comic!

Yesterday, a not-so-subtle rumor started going around that Marvel was going to be making a big announcement -- on ABC's The View. Like you, we also thought, "What? You mean the show Guinan is on?"

After having a long think about how much we miss Guinan's fancy hats, we settled in to see what this big announcement would be. Turns out it's all about the new Thor. And the new God of Thunder, turns out, is gonna be a goddess.

Here's the official announcement:

Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor's hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it's time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

Whoopi Goldberg gave a tiny extra snippet about the character, saying, "The story behind her is she created herself. She was saved by Thor and she came down to Earth, followed him, and made herself look like Thor, and so now she’s taking over." So she's from Asgard then, maybe? But we still don't know if we've met her in the comics before or if she's brand spankin' new.

Hard to have an opinion on this, really. On the one hand, Marvel is killing it with their female-led books. Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk are all fantastic from month to month. But this is Thor we're talking about. We kind of have a movie franchise built around the dude version right now that's playing pretty well. It's not that we don't think a woman can do the job; it's just that we don't buy that she'll really keep the job for very long. Marvel may not want us to call her Thorita (and, by the way, who would have even come up with that one?), but it's kind of hard not to assume that she won't ultimately wind up being exactly that.

What do you think? Does this work for you, or is there a nerd rage storm a-brewin' in your heart?
