Del Toro teaming with Avengers co-writer for 'very different' Pacific Rim 2

Though it was just a modest hit in the U.S., Guillermo del Toro’s monsters-vs.-robots sci-fi epic Pacific Rim pulled in solid box-office totals internationally — meaning there’s still a chance it could get a sequel.

Despite the lack of a green light at this point, del Toro is moving ahead anyway, and is already deep into the writing process on a script that he promises will be “very different” from the first film. He’s also enlisted a new writer: genre heavyweight Zak Penn, whose credits include everything from The Incredible Hulk to X-Men: The Last Stand and a pass at the Avengers script.

Here’s what del Toro told BuzzFeed about the sequel’s development:

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn,” he told BuzzFeed. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.

Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

Though he doesn’t mention it here, del Toro has previously teased that a sequel might focus on the kaiju homeworld glimpsed at the end of Pacific Rim. Considering the fact that he also plans to bring back original characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), it sounds like this is the direction he’s leaning.

What do you think? Would you like to see a sequel to Pacific Rim?
