Watch the low budget sci-fi short Godzilla's Gareth Edwards made in 48 hours

Back before Gareth Edwards became the blockbuster director behind Godzilla, he was an aspiring filmmaker out to make a name for himself — and along the way, he created this awesome sci-fi short as part of a competition.

Dubbed Factory Farmed, this atmospheric little sci-fi short was made for the 2008 SCI-FI-LONDON 48hr Film Challenge. Per the contest, Edwards’ team was given the title, required to include a clear bottle with red or green liquid as a prop, and write in this snippet of dialogue: “I am required to carry out this task until completion: your orders do not override anything.”

Apart from that, Edwards was allowed to go as far as his minuscule budget and imagination would take him within the 48-hour time limit. The result was this, a 5+ minute sci-fi short film he wrote, shot and edited in just two days.

With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to see the Monsters director’s style shine through as he takes his time to set up shots and parse out story details that keep you dangling to know more. Check it out below, and see how the hottest guy in Hollywood got his start:
