Deliver Us From Evil trailer delivers the demonic goods

Deliver Us From Evil

A New York police officer walks the beat from hell in the nightmarish new trailer for Deliver Us From Evil.

If The Conjuring was last summer's big horror hit, then Deliver Us From Evil looks like it's angling for the 2014 crown. Eric Bana (Star Trek 2009) plays real-life Big Apple cop Ralph Sarchie, who begins encountering the supernatural in case after case and finally teams up with a priest (Edgar Ramirez) to stop an encroaching wave of demonic evil.

The movie is based on Sarchie's book, which detailed his encounters and chronicled his journey from skeptic to full-blown investigator for the Vatican. Apparently Sarchie also has a collection of videos of real-life exorcisms that were so terrifying that Bana recently said at WonderCon that he couldn't sleep for days after seeing them (Olivia Munn, who plays his wife, was so freaked out that she had to stop watching after barely a minute).

While the trailer goes for a mix of both slow-burn scares and jump shocks, director Scott Derrickson has brought a lot more of the former to his previous movies The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Sinister, both of which creeped out this writer -- and believe me, it takes a lot to do that these days.

Interestingly, this is the first horror movie ever produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the mega-producer behind massive franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure as well as TV hits like the CSI franchise.

Watch the trailer below and tell us if it makes you ready to call 911. Deliver Us From Evil opens on July 2.
