Big Bang Theory teaming up with Lucasfilm for Star Wars Day-centric episode

The Big Bang Theory is going to be sticking around for at least three more years, and the folks behind it seem to have been emboldened by their big-time renewal. The proof? A just-announced team-up with Lucasfilm for a Star Wars extravaganza.

As part of the May 1 episode “The Proton Transmogrification,” the studio has worked with Lucasfilm to re-create Yoda’s swamplike home of Dagobah. The installment is timed around Star Wars Day on May 4, so you’ve gotta love the synergy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the episode will follow the gang as they get together to celebrate the annual geek holiday, while Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is guided by visions of his childhood idol and mentor, Professor Proton (Emmy winner Bob Newhart), who appears to the socially challenged genius as his own Jedi master.

Lucasfilm VFX guru Eddie Pasquarello served as the on-set consultant for the episode, and it sounds like they kicked in a good bit of effort to make it happen. Here’s what he had to say about the team-up:

“We at ILM were very excited to do the effects for it. Everyone loves the show there and to have the tie-in to May the Fourth felt like a good synergy and marriage. We jumped at it. We did talk about what the set would look like and they sent us pictures of the light saber hilt and the Dagobah set and we were impressed. We talked about the interactive lighting for the light saber and some of the ideas that were there. They did an amazing job of getting it together.”

For fans of the show, it should be a fun romp into the Star Wars mythos. For non-fans, this probably won’t make ‘em fall in love with the series, but it might be worth checking out for the wackiness of it all.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Big Bang Theory?
