Why Marvel's Joe Quesada thinks General Zod was the hero of Man of Steel

During a chat with Kevin Smith on the Fat Man on Batman podcast, Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada chatted about his disappointment concerning Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, baldly claiming that he felt that “Zod (Michael Shannon) was the hero of the movie.” Yes. Really.

Joe Quesada said:

“As a comic book fan, I wanted to love that movie so much. I wanted to love it so much, and I didn’t love it so much. Again, there are little things here and there that you could pick at and things like that, but I just think at the end of the day, Zod was the hero of the movie to me.”

Well, that's a tad ... different. As far as most of us Earthlings go, Superman is the quintessential superhero. He’s definitely not the bad guy (neck snapping notwithstanding) here. So why does Quesada think that it's the "Kneel Before Zod" Kryptonian general who was the hero of Man of Steel?

“He wanted to save his race, and Superman didn’t let him. Zod, in this particular incarnation, struck me as not necessarily an evil man, but a man of…he had a particular…he had his orders, he had a mission. He was a zealot of sorts, but he was a zealot…again, correct me if I’m wrong… but he didn’t say, ‘I want to rebuild Krypton, and then come back and destroy this little planet. All I want is to rebuild this planet. And the only reason I’m blowing everything to bits here is because you’ve got what I want, and you’re not giving it to me. So please, give me my people, and I’ll leave.”

Hum, yeah. No. Just no. Zod wanted to destroy the Earth, killing all of its inhabitants in the process. We don't know about you guys, but a raging alien hell-bent on destroying a whole planet for his own agenda -- even if said agenda was to rebuild Krypton -- doesn’t sound heroic to us. At all.

Joe Quesada also added: “I was in the mood to watch that Superman movie, and afterwards I was just angry.”

Do you guys agree with Joe Quesada’s statement here? Do you also believe that Zod, in a weird, twisted way, was the true hero of Man of Steel rather than the Son of Krypton?
