Marvel exec promises 'street level noir' for Daredevil, Netflix series

With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finally hitting its creative stride, it has us even more excited for Marvel’s upcoming slate of Netflix series.

Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada was a recent guest on the Fat Man on Batman podcast, and opened up about the approach they’re taking to Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the Defenders miniseries.

As expected, Quesada confirmed that the shows will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and teased some “interconnectivity” to the big-screen universe and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But they plan on telling smaller superhero stories this time around, and we’re hoping these shows can hit the sweet spot S.H.I.E.L.D. missed in the first half of its season.

Here are some choice quotes about the approach they’re taking, and we’re digging the “noir” vibe:

“Although these are superhero stories, this is different now. This is the street level…this is the street level noir side of the Marvel Universe. Something that you haven’t really, really seen in any of our Marvel movies. And probably more ground level, than I think you’ve seen. This is not like us doing Batman, Dark Knight or any of that stuff. This is very Marvel doing street level superheroes.

The scripts are coming in. They are pretty fantastic. They’re really emotional. They’re very, very original. But at the same time, it is Daredevil. It is Matt Murdock. We will eventually, hopefully start casting really, really soon, but I’m very, very excited about it… We’re shooting in New York. That’s the fantastic thing about it is that we’re shooting at home. We’re shooting where these characters belong. These stories take place in Hell’s Kitchen.”

Netflix has proven to be a high-quality production company, and Marvel has shown more than once they can make some awesome content. Put 'em together? We're pretty psyched. Which series are you looking forward to the most?
