Whoa! Captain America: The Winter Soldier has raked in $500 million worldwide!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has already passed $500 million worldwide, less than two weeks after it opened in North America. Can we have a whoa!?

According to Box Office Mojo, the Marvel superhero movie starring Chris Evans as Captain America/Steve Rogers, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow/Natasha Romanov, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes and Samuel L. Jackson as Director Nick Fury hit the $500 million milestone on Tuesday and is now sitting comfortably (as of yesterday) at $502.2 million, with $167 million in North America and $335.2 million internationally. (It opened about three weeks ago overseas.) Winter Soldier has reaped more than $80 million from China alone.

And we expect Winter Soldier to take in lots more money in the coming weeks -- despite the threatening webby presence of Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

This puts The Winter Soldier far ahead of the first Captain America flick, Captain America: The First Avenger, which brought in $370 million globally in 2011. It wasn’t a flop, far from it, but it wasn’t the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest money maker.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier may have benefited from the momentum provided by Marvel’s The Avengers, which was released in 2012 (as did Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World), but we believe that The Winter Soldier’s box-office success stems from the fact that it has garnered great reviews and good word of mouth and that it’s also a pretty darn terrific, solid superhero flick that has people running back to the theaters to see it again and again and again.
