Back to the Grid! TRON Legacy director offers promising update on sequel

There was a lot of buzz to complete the TRON trilogy a few years ago, but after TRON Legacy put up so-so numbers at the box office, things went relatively quiet. Until now.

Director Joseph Kosinski talked at length about the potential sequel in an interview with Assignment X, and he confirmed that plans are definitely still moving forward on a followup to the 2010 sci-fi flick.

The long-awaited sequel picked up in real time after the events of TRON, and started a whole new avalanche of stories in the Grid. It also ended on a pretty massive, open-ended moment, which Kosinski says they plan to explore in the sequel:

“We're working on the story right now. Once we get a script we're all really happy with, we'll take it to the powers that be and see if we can go back to the Grid. I think we will pick [up] with where TRON Legacy left off with Quorra in the real world and what does that mean and the possibilities it opens up for the next chapter. It's the relationship between the two of them that's the next step…

Dillinger [played by David Warner] was a really important part of the first Tron and it felt like an easy way to continue that storyline and thread to have his son (Cillian Murphy) in Tron Legacy. That way you have people ask those questions of what the Dillinger legacy is in the world of Tron. We didn't want to ignore it completely, and it leaves a really nice springboard for some intertwining development for the next film.”

It’s disappointing that it’s been four years and we still don’t have a green light, but if it takes that long to nail down a good script, then so be it. We waited a few decades for the first sequel, so a few more years to get it right won’t kill us.

What do you think? Do you want another TRON sequel?
