It's no secret that Fox wants to expand its X-Men universe; now that Marvel and Sony are upping the ante, they have to do the same. X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently confirmed that they're developing several spinoffs, one of which may include Gambit.
She previously stated her interest in Channing Tatum playing the Cajun mutant, and the actor has no objections. Tatum has been vocal about his love of the character and how he feels he's perfect for the part. Plus, he's already met with Donner about the possibility of working together.
“Gambit’s really [the] only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know, I guess just being from down south—my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida," he explained. "I just related to him. He’s just kind of a suave; he’s the most un-X-Men X-Man who’s ever been in X-Men, other than maybe Wolverine. He’s kind of like the anti-hero; he’s a thief. He’s not even like a hero, he’s kind of walking the line of grey. He loves women and drinking and smoking, he’s just a cool guy that happens to have a good moral center.”
Even though nothing's been confirmed, Tatum is already prepping for the role. “I hope it does [come together]. You never know, it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would play it. I’m already working on the accent.”
Hopefully, X-Men: Days of Future Past ignites interest in other characters in the franchise besides Wolverine. It would be great to see Gambit in a solo movie.
