Back to Mongo! Big-budget Flash Gordon reboot reportedly in the works

Nostalgia is major currency these days, and it sounds like one of science fiction’s most famous classics could be getting another lease on life.

Film Divider is reporting a reboot of Flash Gordon is in the works, with relative newcomers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3) putting the script together. The project is said to be a swashbuckling space adventure, along the lines of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot.

Though most modern-day fans will probably be more familiar with the 1980s film, or even the recent one-season Syfy adaptation, Payne and McKay are going back to the basics for inspiration. The script apparently pulls its tone from the original 1930s serials, which is probably a good move, as it should give some balance to the concept.

The pitch is being compared to the classic return to form Tim Burton pulled off with Batman, and we think a good Flash Gordon revival is long overdue. Considering that fellow sci-fi classic Battlestar Galactica is getting a reboot, as well, it’s high time we head back to Mongo for some sci-fi zaniness.

Sadly, we still have a long way to go until we see this one of the big screen, as the writers are still shopping it around for a studio to pony up the budget. But if Star Trek 3 is a hit, we'd hope that'll give them a bit more cachet to get this one made.

Do you think a classic like Flash Gordon can hold its own in the modern sci-fi era?
