Image of the Day: Godzilla and military get uncomfortably close

A few new photos from the upcoming Godzilla reboot have surfaced online, including what could be our clearest look yet at the giant fearsome monster.

All along we've been seeing images of Godzilla's tail, spine and so on, along with a few quick glimpses of him in the trailers and some artistic renderings. But over at Dread Central they've got a still that gives us a clear head-on look at the massive kaiju in action.

The shot shows Godzilla towering over a clutch of military vehicles as they fire -- uselessly, I would imagine -- a barrage of weapons at him. Flames and explosions billow around the monstrous reptile, whose face seems to suggest that he couldn't care less about it all. If you were 350 feet tall, I suspect you wouldn't either.

Director Gareth Edwards' vision of Godzilla looks sinister and sleek, a far cry from the anthropomorphic Godzillas of the late '60s and '70s and leagues beyond the oversized iguana that scuttled around New York in Roland Emmerich's disastrous 1998 version. In fact, the new Gojira falls more in line with the Toho editions of the '90s and '00s, which is a good thing.

Just for fun, we've also found a bonus shot posted at that shows what Godzilla's dentist sees every time the big guy goes in for a checkup.

We're just over a month out from Godzilla's May 16 arrival in theaters, and I suspect there's much more to this movie that we still have yet to see. But for now, drink in these views of the King of the Monsters and sound off below with your thoughts.
