This week's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode left us with a lot of things to question, including the mortality of one character.
SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ahead!
"Turn, Turn, Turn" was easily the most eventful episode the Marvel series has delivered yet. Old allegiances were broken, while new ones were forged, the people you thought you could trust turned out to be the people you couldn't, and it looked like one of the team's allies didn't make it out alive.
In the episode's final moments, Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) turned on his S.H.I.E.L.D. allies, killing two unnamed agents and the formidable Agent Victoria Hand (Saffron Burrows) to free Agent Garrett (Bill Paxton) -- a recently revealed HYDRA sleeper agent -- from Hand's custody. The reveal of Ward as a HYDRA agent (or at least a HYDRA collaborator) was shocking enough, but the murder of Agent Hand was the icing on the bloody cake.
This is Marvel storytelling we're talking about, though, and since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars a guy (Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson) who was supposedly murdered in The Avengers and was later brought back to life through top-secret methods, many fans were left wondering if Hand was really dead after all.
In a new interview over at IGN, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producers Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb were asked just how serious Hand's condition is after taking three rounds from Ward's sidearm. Bell didn't mince words.
"Let's say that Ward definitely killed [Hand and the other two agents]," he said.
Bell went on a little longer, though, and what he said next could be considered wiggle room for the character's return someday.
"It's the Marvel Universe... But he definitely put three shots in her, and he killed her," he said.
So we know that Agent Hand was definitely killed by Agent Ward at the end of "Turn, Turn, Turn," but as Bell said, "It's the Marvel Universe." Coulson was dead for, we now know, days before being revived, and he seems pretty sprightly lately. So could Hand come back? It doesn't seem likely (or necessary) anytime soon, but of course, anything's possible when you exist in a universe that features magic alien blood.
