Game of Thrones' new marketing strategy involves rappers spitting dope rhymes

It's hard to believe that HBO's Game of Thrones requires any more advertising. But I guess that, very technically, not every human being on the planet is watching the show yet. Obviously, there's still work to be done. One of the audiences that HBO feels it needs to appeal more toward is the "urban market." So, what's their plan?

Rap. Hip-hop. A dropping of the bass.

Yes, a host of great artists (or "celebrity influencers," if you're nasty) are getting together to craft a mix tape titled Catch the Throne. What will that involve, exactly? One of the participating musicians, Common, compares it to what Wu-Tang Clan was doing back in the '90s -- sampling clips from '70s Chinese action movies. So a bunch of today's big names in rap and hip-hop will rhyme over beats derived from sampling Game of Thrones.

If that sounds odd, the data seem to support a need for this move. During the third season, the Nielsen report showed that the audience was 13.2 percent black, 9.2 percent Hispanic and 76.6 percent white. So, yeah, there is a mighty big opportunity to expand the show's audience.

And, luckily for HBO, there are plenty of rappers who are already into Game of Thrones. Folks like Wale, Big Boi (of newly reunited Outkast), Common, Daddy Yankee and Bodega Bamz are already committed to be involved. Here's a sampling of some lyrics, courtesy of Wale:

"I'm tellin' whoever messin' with me/I can bring you that Khaleesi heat/Use my King, knack for words, as an actual sword/I can decapitate a rapper." 

In fact, the only name we don't see that we immediately wished was there is Black Thought from the Roots. After all, there's already a House Tyrell, right? Why not a House Tyriq?
