Producer Matthew Vaughn sheds light on a new tone for that Fanastic Four reboot

If you were hoping for another light-hearted Fantastic Four adventure in the reboot, it seems you're out of luck.

We've already seen plenty of indications that we're in for a different kind of Fantastic Four movie in 2015. The decision to skew younger with the casting of the titular heros (among other shifts) is the biggest sign of changes so far, but we've also heard rumors of a very different origin story. Apart from the casting news, though, it's been hard to separate truth from rumor when it comes to Chronicle director Josh Trank's reboot. Now producer Matthew Vaughn (Kick-AssX-Men: First Class) is shedding a little light on what we can expect from the film, at least in terms of tone.

Speaking to Empire about how the film might relate to Fox's last two Fantastic Four flicks, Vaughn declared simply that it wouldn't be tied to the past of the franchise at all. Trank's version of Marvel's first family is a clean break from the last big-screen version.

“It's a total reboot, that's for sure. It's got nothing to do with the other bloody ones," Vaughn said.

Vaughn also added a brief remark about the film's tone that could speak volumes about where Trank and company are headed.

“It's not stretchy guy and a guy running around in rock that looks like it's made polystyrene," he said. "And its not a comedy."

While Vaughn said nothing at all about the plot, origin story, villain or overall arc of any of the characters, he did seem to give us a clear indication of what the reboot is setting out to do compared to the more light-hearted, often campy feel that the 2005 and 2007 films had. A sense of humor has always been part of the Fantastic Four dynamic, though, particularly when it comes to Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, so here's hoping Vaughn and Trank don't ditch that entirely.

What do you think? Is the less comedic route the way to go, or do you like your Fantastic Four to pack some laughs?
