New Ninja Turtles writer fires back at complaints 1st trailer was too 'dark'

With the first trailer finally live for the new, live-action take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, screenwriter Andre Nemec has opened up about the “dark” tone some viewers have sensed.

The trailer is definitely not what we expected, and it does have a different color palette than fans might expect from the classic franchise, likely best known for the various animated series and comic books (the original versions of which were in black and white) that spawned it all. In a lengthy interview on the film, Nemec (Life on Mars, Alias) told Coming Soon they weren’t aiming to drop the Turtles into a Dark Knight-style world.

It’s a little hard to discern that from the trailer, sadly, but we’re glad to hear Nemec is aware that the footage could be construed that way. He also noted producer Michael Bay’s (Transformers) involvement, and said viewers will definitely be able to spot his fingerprints on the project. You be the judge on whether that’s actually a good thing.

Check out an excerpt below:

“Tone was a very interesting question on this movie as far as how dark we really wanted to go. It's really all in the conflict between the characters. That was the driving principle. The color palettes that were chosen were not designed to be Dark Knight-ish in that regard. We weren't looking to make that movie. I'm a huge fan of that movie, but I didn't eat gobs of popcorn while I was watching that movie. We certainly didn't want kids to be running for the exits. 'Mommy! Why did he do that?!' We weren't looking for that. We really wanted to entertain and have fun with it. I think we skate -- we live -- on a very fun line in this movie, whether it's the action feeling real and exciting, but also fun and adventurous. It really never feels dark in a way that would startle you out of your chair or make you fearful…

Michael [Bay] has been an influence on the movie and he's certainly been giving his notes and paying attention to the movie as we go through. There are Michael Bay aesthetics. He has a very good sense of action. He has a very good sense of entertainment. I think that, on those influences, you'll feel Michael Bay's hand."

If you’re interested in the film, we highly recommend you give the interview a read. Nemec touches on a variety of topics, from easter eggs to the tweaked genesis of the Turtles themselves. So what did you think of the trailer?
