Emma Stone on the fate of Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 2: 'There will be surprises'

While The Amazing Spider-Man boasted some awesome web-slinging action, what really worked was the love story between Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. According to director Marc Webb, “That relationship is the engine of the movie. It’s what holds it together.” Despite that, there have been rumors floating around the Internet that Gwen Stacy will, in keeping with her fate in the comics, not live to see The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Back in June of last year, the actress was seen wearing a costume that was pretty similar to what the character wore when Gwen died in the 1973 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man #121, which is forever known as “The Night Gwen Stacy Died.” This tragic event has always been THE pivotal moment in the web-slinger’s life.

Of course, no one involved in the flick will either deny or confirm this, but Stone admitted that all this gossip bothered her:

“I was really upset. I feel hyper protective over the secrecy of what happens to Gwen. I was like, ‘Why did we shoot out on the street?’ I was upset for a day and then I realized there’s nothing else we can do. There’s stuff out there.”

But the actress warns us that:

“There are things that I know about that haven’t been seen yet. There are also things that people are speculating on that I know aren’t true.” She laughs. “There will be surprises.”

What do you guys think? Do you think Gwen Stacy will avoid her fate and live to see another day on The Amazing Spider-Man 3? Or do you think she’ll perish at the hands of Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin, just like her comic-book counterpart?
