Rumor of the Day: A classic Star Wars planet will return for Episode 7

We've already been promised familiar faces for the next Star Wars film, and now there are whispers of a familiar location, too.

The idea that J.J. Abrams' continuation of the Star Wars saga will revisit familiar franchise locales isn't itself surprising. In fact, it's expected. It would be strange to return to the galaxy far, far away 30 years after the Galactic Empire was overthrown and not see places like Coruscant, for instance, and even a visit to the ancestral home of the Skywalker family, Tatooine, wouldn't feel out of place.

Some planets seem more likely to appear than others, though, and a new report claims that one particular Star Wars planet that you may not have expected to see again is coming back.

Icelandic news site Visir has sources claiming that crews connected to Star Wars: Episode VII could be shooting in Iceland this spring for scenes set on the ice planet Hoth. Full production on the film is expected to begin in May at London's Pinewood Studios, but Visir reports that crews in Iceland may arrive in April to film "plate shots," background images that will then be used for green-screen work done by the cast on a soundstage. In reporting Visir's claims, The Week also notes that Icelandic film company True North was connected to reports of Star Wars location scouts in Iceland as far back as October, so while we're still taking this with a grain of salt, it's certainly not an isolated rumor.

If new Hoth scenes really are happening, though, it's hard not to wonder why. The planet's initial appeal in The Empire Strikes Back was its remoteness and hostility. It was a good site for a hidden rebel base because it was inhospitable and out of the way, so what could be going on there now that's worth mentioning? Did someone build a city there for some reason? Did an Imperial remnant set up its own hidden base there? Is Luke just going to go back and apologize to the Wampa? We'll just have to wait and see if Hoth really is returning to find out.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
