Jai Courtney (sorta) defends his casting as Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genesis

Jai Courtney may not be the Kyle Reese some want, but perhaps he is the Kyle Reese we need.

While the Australian actor was out to promote Divergent, he opened up about joining the cast of Alan Taylor’s Terminator: Genesis, where he'll be stepping into the iconic shoes of John Connor’s dad, Kyle Reese.

"I've always had a bit of skepticism about something being rebooted. I remember when [A Good Day to] Die Hard came around a few years ago, I was like, 'Really? They're gonna make another one?' and then I found myself in it and totally invested in it. I think it's healthy to have that [skepticism] because you want it to be something [special], you want to keep that eye for quality sharp."

As for the reason why he decided to join the project -- which will apparently take place in a variety of periods neatly plucked from the first two original Terminator flicks -- in the first place, Courtney added this (and in the process, kinda defended his decision to join Genesis):

"But when I read this, I was pretty into it and the story's cool. It's attached a great cast as well. I think Emilia Clarke's wonderful and she's got a lot of support and stuff behind her. And Jason Clarke as well I'm a big admirer of so, yeah, it's gonna be really cool, man. I'm looking forward to doing that, and running around with Arnie won't be too bad."

Terminator: Genesis will be directed by Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor and also stars the former Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as Game of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) as John Connor.

Courtney's technically the fifth actor to play the role, following in the footsteps of Michael Biehn, who played the role in Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Anton Yelchin in Terminator: Salvation. Reese was also played on TV by Skyler Gisondo as a child and Jonathan Jackson in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. But the role has essentially always been Michael Biehn's. Think Courtney will manage to make Kyle Reese his own?
