One of these four candidates could direct Marvel's Doctor Strange

Marvel's Doctor Strange movie is finally happening. After years of hoping, the studio's taking the first major step toward production. They haven't cast the title character, but they're zoning in on potential directors. Four talented but very different candidates are on Marvel's shortlist. Which one of them has the competitive edge over the others?

Marvel's either met with or is about to meet with Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday), Mark Andrews (Pixar's Brave) and Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair). Meanwhile, they're also eyeing possible screenwriters who could work closely with the chosen director. A couple names being thrown around are Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger. They're the duo behind the animated Kung Fu Panda films.

One of the reasons Marvel's kept Doctor Strange on the back burner is his supernatural origin. Also, his costume and the Eye of Agamotto are very eccentric. But at this point if they can make Thor, Loki and Rocket Raccoon believable, anything is possible. With Guardians of the Galaxy, they're taking the MCU in an otherworldly direction. If the film's a hit it could open the floodgates for more unconventional superheroes.
