Marvel reportedly close to signing Mike Colter to lead Luke Cage series on Netflix

We’ve already seen a boatload of Marvel casting news this week, and it looks like the company is on the verge of closing the deal for another character.

It’s being reported that Marvel is very close to signing Mike Colter (Halo: Nightfall, The Following) to play Luke Cage in what is expected to be some crossover action between the Jessica Jones series and the eventual Luke Cage series at Netflix — not to mention the Defenders miniseries. Initial rumblings of his casting were noted in the first reports of Ritter’s deal.

Considering Krysten Ritter has locked up the lead in Jessica Jones, it makes sense that news on Luke Cage would be quick to follow. As Marvel fans know, the two characters eventually marry in the comics, so it stands to reason that Cage could be a major supporting player in Jessica Jones before his headlining gig. Gotta love that Marvel synergy.

As for what we can expect, Colter definitely has the look and physicality to pull off a believable Luke Cage. In the comics, Cage is sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit and volunteers for an experiment to reduce his sentence. This being a comic-book story, that experiment leads to super-strength and near-impervious skin, which he eventually uses to become a street-level hero.

Luckily for us, we don’t have to wait until these shows finally show up on Netflix to see Colter in action. The actor is starring in Microsoft’s Halo: Nightfall series as a soldier, which should give him a chance to show off the action chops.
