Why Winter Soldier writer thinks it's a good thing Cap 'doesn't really' have a story arc

Considering the fact that he’s a man out of time, Captain America represents a pretty unique character among big-screen heroes. But Winter Soldier writer Christopher Markus thinks the film works best because the character "doesn’t really" have an arc. Huh?

The comments came from a recent interview in the print edition of Empire, with the co-screenwriter digging into the challenges of making the wholesome do-gooder a compelling hero for the modern age. The trick? Keep him the same, and just let the world change around him. Hey, it definitely seems like a good fit for the man-out-of-time approach.

Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

"What helps us get past the pious Boy Scout that he could turn into is that he doesn't really want to be this guy. He would prefer to be Steve Rogers just walking down the street, helping people sometimes. He felt the call when the War came. He's kind of the still center and things happen around him and are influenced by him. It's interesting in this movie, for instance, to watch his relationship with Black Widow, who of course has a very different outlook. It can make it difficult with executives who often want arcs. It's very difficult not to sound lazy when you go, 'Well, he doesn't really have an arc.'"

Markus definitely has a unique take on the character, and it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out when this one opens next year. Plus, it makes some kind of sense, because Steve Rogers never wanted to be a hero of the 2000s. He joined up to help fight the Axis powers back in World War II, not battle aliens as part of a super-team in downtown Manhattan. Plus, everyone he knew is either dead or a senior citizen. You can see how he might be a little bummed.

But what better way to push his buttons now than by bringing back an old friend as a new baddie? Yeah, we can’t wait for April 4, 2014.

What do you think of Markus’ approach? Have you been impressed with how Marvel brought the character to life in First Avenger and The Avengers?
