Ever since she was created in 1992, Squirrel Girl's been kind of a background hero, emerging now and then for a moment in the spotlight (like defeating Doctor Doom) before heading back to babysit Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' daughter. Fortunately for her, Marvel Comics has had a lot of success lately with taking sometimes unexpected characters and giving them their own ongoing series with their own distinct personalities. It's worked for Hawkeye, Black Widow, Moon Knight and more, and now the publisher is hoping Squirrel Girl will have similar success with her very first ongoing solo series.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, written by Ryan North (Adventure Time) and drawn by rising star Erica Henderson (Subatomic Party Girls), will follow the titular hero and her sidekick squirrel Tippy-Toe as they head off to face the terrifying challenge that is college, while also traveling throughout the Marvel Universe to take on supervillains. In a press release for the series, Marvel particularly emphasized how much Doreen Green really loves being the hero that she is, even if most people have never heard of her.
"She may not be the world’s most popular super hero. Most people don’t even know she exists. But she loves being Squirrel Girl, helping people, and saving the world (even though most people don’t know it)!"
Now comic readers everywhere will have a new chance to get to know Squirrel Girl, and what we've seen of the book so far definitely plays up the character's sense of fun. In the pages below, you'll get a lettered preview that features Squirrel Girl making up her own theme song while taking out a mugger, as well as two unlettered pages that feature another mugger takedown and an encounter with Kraven the Hunter. Check those out below.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 hits comics shops on Jan. 7. Will it be on your pull list?
