Marvel casts its Luke Cage for Netflix series

Marvel has confirmed the man who will play Luke Cage for both its Jessica Jones series and his own show.

According to The Wrap, that man is Mike Colter, who plays Agent Jameson Locke in Halo: Nightfall and voices the character in the Halo videogames. He has also been seen on The Good Wife and American Horror Story: Coven.

Colter will make his debut as Cage next year opposite Krysten Ritter in Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones, the second of the company's slate of Netflix series after Daredevil. Colter will then spin off into a show of his own following the Jones program.

Executive producer Melissa Rosenberg said, "Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage. We’re excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”

Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb chimed in, "Fans have longed to see Luke Cage brought and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor. Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones, and experience why he is such an important super hero in the Marvel mythos.”

In the comics, Cage first appeared in 1972 in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (the book was later known as Power Man). Cage was meant to capitalize on the audience for the blaxploitation films that were popular at the time, and spent most of his time in a gritty, violent version of New York City. He gained superhuman strength, healing powers and durability as a result of an experiment gone wrong involving a variant on the Super-Soldier formula.

Throughout his long history, he's fought alongside Iron Fist and as part of the Secret Defenders, the Secret Avengers, the New Avengers, Heroes for Hire and the Thunderbolts (he and Jessica also had a child as a result of a one-night drunken tryst and ended up getting married).
