The Last Guardian video game: Not dead yet

At this point, The Last Guardian is on the verge of reaching a Duke Nukem Forever-level of mystery and vaporware — but the game’s original creator promises it is definitely still on the way.

Development started on The Last Guardian all the way back in 2007, and it was first announced at 2009’s E3 expo. But the projected 2011 release date came and went, and now the would-be PS3 exclusive has stayed in development for so long that it’s almost certainly being switched over to a PS4 engine at this point.

But don’t take the near-decade development cycle to mean the game is dead. Original creator Fumito Ueda, who has since left Sony but is still working on the game as a consultant, told Dengeki Playstation that all the problems that mired development have been fixed and they’re actually barreling ahead once again:

“Talks with Sony Computer Entertainment on The Last Guardian have been ironed out, and we’re making progress under completely new conditions. I’m also working on some other things that I’ll hopefully be able to show in time if progress is smooth.”

The game revolves around a young boy who befriends a giant bird/cat-like creature, Trico, and the duo have to work together to navigate a dangerous fantasy world. Strange, yes, but it comes from one heck of a good pedigree.

The game is such a big deal because it's being made by Team ICO, the minds behind the beloved and acclaimed PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus — which many contest is one of the best videogames ever made (and is actually currently in development to become a feature film).

Though news on The Last Guardian has been quiet the past few years, it’s great to hear this game is really still a thing. Considering how much time and energy have gone into it, we’re dying to see what Team ICO has put together once it finally makes its way out into the wild.
