Sure, Futurama’s run might be over — but that doesn’t mean Matt Groening’s future-set animated series is gone for good.
Since Groening is also the guy behind Fox’s The Simpsons, he’s bringing the two shows together in this week’s episode, airing Nov. 9 and dubbed (appropriately) “Simpsorama.” The main voice actors from Futurama will all return for the event, which follows snarky robot Bender as he travels back in time to take out Bart before he causes a mass catastrophe.
So how’d it all happen? Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly that the writers are all obviously fans of the show and figured a crossover would be a great way to have one last hurrah for Fry, Bender, Leela and the gang:
“They were going off the air, so I thought people would really love it if we had one more chance to see those characters. We’re always looking for things that are compatible with us, and I thought, ‘Well, what’s more compatible?’ We do a joke, actually, about how similar Bender and Homer look. Like, they just erased Homer’s hair.”
A new clip from the episode has also been released, though sadly it is not embeddable. You can check it out over at Entertainment Weekly.
