Kirkman reveals his biggest regret about The Walking Dead TV series

Bringing The Walking Dead from page to screen has been a tight balancing act the past several years, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t made a few mistakes along the way. So, what’s creator Robert Kirkman’s biggest regret?

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Kirkman was asked about his biggest regret throughout the show’s ongoing five-season run. For Kirkman, the biggest regret came early — the season-one finale that found the gang traveling to the CDC office in Atlanta.

The episode is when Rick learned that everyone is infected and will turn into a walker once they die, not just those bitten by a zombie, which is a factoid it took much longer to discover in the comic run. The comic also played the reveal out in a much more dramatic fashion, with a character dying and returning to the absolute shock of everyone.

Here’s an excerpt from Kirkman’s comments:

"If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have done the CDC episode [at the end of season one]. It possibly gave away too much information and was such a big change very early on in the series. I feel like there might have been a better way to wrap up the first season. It ended up being a fun episode. I love the character of Dr. Jenner and thought Noah did an amazing job. But there were things in that episode that I think seem very much not of The Walking Dead world."

Looking at the full run of the series, it’s easy to see Kirkman’s point. The back half of season one definitely has a different feel than the rest of the series, which makes sense, since much of the CDC arc was created uniquely for the television series. The TV-specific arcs have been hit and miss, and at least for Kirkman, he feels that one was a miss.

Luckily for us, the writers room seems to have found a balance between the comic canon and how it’s translated on screen. Even TV diversions like the ongoing Beth arc are still compelling, if only because they’re well executed and fit the overall tone of the series.
