Report: Warner Bros. has found its Deadshot for the Suicide Squad film

Things have really heated up for the Suicide Squad film lately. A few months ago it was little more than a whisper, a possibly developing project with no real progress, and now it's got a director (Fury helmer David Ayer), a release date (Aug. 5, 2016) and a host of hot, if unconfirmed, stars reportedly attached. Just this week we heard that Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) is in talks to join the film as a new big-screen version of the Joker, while rising star Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) could be our first big-screen Harley Quinn. Now it looks like Warner Bros. also has a candidate for Deadshot in its sights.

Variety reports that Jai Courtney is "in talks" to play Deadshot in Suicide Squad. After a breakout role as John McClane Jr. in 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard, the Australian actor snagged a couple of high-profile genre franchise roles, first as Eric in Divergent and then as the new Kyle Reese in the forthcoming Terminator: Genisys. Now he's poised to add superhero movies to his resume, and Deadshot is a role that could easily take him from Suicide Squad to any number of other DC Comics-based films in the coming years.

First introduced as an enemy of Batman, Deadshot has become best known among comics readers for his Suicide Squad affiliation, which began in the late '80s under writer John Ostrander. An assassin with near-perfect aim who will never back out of a contract until he's paid, Deadshot is also well known for having a death wish. He's always willing to go down on a mission, and sometimes even engineers situations that will likely result in his own death. This blending of relentless mercenary professionalism with a desire to end his own life makes for a compelling combination, particularly when mixed with the personalities of the rest of the Suicide Squad team.

Variety also reports that the rumored Suicide Squad roles offered to stars Tom Hardy and Will Smith may have also been revealed. In the same report naming Courtney as Deadshot, writer Justin Kroll notes that Hardy is being courted to play Rick Flag, a founding member and team leader of the Squad, and that Smith has "likely" been offered the role of Squad member and Flash nemesis Captain Boomerang.

It's worth noting here that Warner Bros. has yet to confirm any of this, and it could all fall apart by tomorrow. For the moment, though, assuming these reports are true, it looks like Suicide Squad is really taking shape. What do you think of the casting choices listed here?
