That Deadpool movie will officially be part of the X-Men cinematic universe

Fox studios has brought the long-gestating Deadpool project back to life with a release date set for February 2016, no doubt thrilling fans of the "Merc With a Mouth" all over the world no end.

Well, at least until we all heard Fox might slap a PG-13 rating on it, but, moving on.

Since Deadpool is so often associated with the X-Men franchise, the question remained whether the new comic-book flick would be part of the X-Men cinematic universe at large.

In an exclusive interview with, X-Men: Days of Future Past and the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse writer and producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that Deadpool will indeed be part of a larger, expanding, shared cinematic universe with the other X-Men flicks.

Here’s what Kinberg had to say:

“There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it's part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”

Apparently, the original script for Deadpool is said to have been detached from the main X-Men flicks. There are even jokes aimed at that rather tepid entry in the X-franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Deadpool made his on-screen debut. And we all know how THAT one ended.

But the inclusion of Deadpool in the same shared universe as the X-Men flicks does open up an infinite realm of possibilities for crossover and a shared, overarching narrative.

Now, crossing our fingers that Ryan Reynolds can return to bring Wade Wilson back to life.

Deadpool is set to hit theaters on Feb. 12, 2016.
