George Lucas blasts major film studios for having no 'talent' or 'imagination'

What’s wrong with the movie business these days? According to Star Wars creator George Lucas, it’s the soul-sucking corporate suits.

In an intriguing interview with CBS News, Lucas opened up about his thoughts on the film industry and how it has been watered down and corrupted by these heads of major corporations taking creative control when they “didn’t know anything” about how the movie business works.

Looking back to when he was able to make Star Wars (which was an admittedly tough sell, at the time) within the studio system, Lucas bemoaned the fact that many major studios are now too afraid to take creative risks — which has had the obvious effect of meaning there are actually fewer good movies to go around:

“You're selling creativity. Raw creativity from talented people. Now, the problem has always been the studios. Although the beginning of the studios, the entrepreneurs who ran the studios were sort of creative guys. They would just take books and turn them into movies and do things like that. Suddenly all these corporations were coming in. They didn't know anything about the movie business.

They supposedly know how to make films. So suddenly we could get jobs, which was a fantastic thing. But then the studios went back to saying well we don't trust you people and we think we know how to make movies. The studios change everything all the time. And, unfortunately, they don't have any imagination and they don't have any talent.”

Admittedly, it’s kind of funny to hear these sentiments from one of the biggest guys in the current studio system — but it makes sense. Lucas got his start in a very different era, and he has a ringside seat to all the changes that have taken place over the past few decades.

Considering some of the stellar directorial hires Disney has made with Star Wars, here’s hoping that’s a property that can once again generate some fresh creativity for the genre. Fingers crossed.
