Could Bill Murray appear in that Ghostbusters reboot after all?

After years of ducking Ghostbusters 3, could Bill Murray actually appear in the reboot?

There will be no third adventure for the original Ghostbusters team, but it's now official that the Ghostbusters franchise will continue on the big screen with a reboot focused on a team of women. The Internet's been buzzing about which actresses would be part of a dream cast for the flick, and now that it's been confirmed that acclaimed director Paul Feig (BridesmaidsThe Heat) will be helming the film and co-writing it with The Heat scribe Katie Dippold, the future of the franchise looks bright again.

News of a complete Ghostbusters reboot means that the pressure is finally off the original film's stars to return, including Bill Murray, who's offered countless variations on "yes," "no" and "maybe" when asked whether he'd be back for Ghostbusters 3 over the years. Murray's already endorsed the all-female reboot, and even named some of his favorite funny women who could star in the film. Now that he knows this new film won't feature a past that includes his Peter Venkman, though, would he be more inclined to pop up for a cameo?

Variety reports that Sony Pictures would "jump at the chance" to get Murray involved in the new film in some small role, but that the challenge, as always, will be in convincing him. According to Variety, who just interviewed the star, Murray didn't directly address whether he'd come back, but did indicate that he might be interested if Feig and Dippold are able to create something new rather than simply following the lead of the original film.

“Those guys, Danny [Aykroyd] and Harold [Ramis], were at the top of their game,” Murray said. “They were burning nitro at that moment. Unless you have a really clear vision, you’re always trying to recreate that.”

Of course, given that this is Bill Murray, we likely won't know for sure if he'll appear in the film until we actually see him onscreen. If he does cameo, though, he'll have a hard time topping the brief appearance he made in Zombieland.

What do you think? Will Murray actually come back for the reboot?
