Robert Downey. Jr. joins Captain America 3. Is a Civil War brewing?

Marvel's about to take viewers on a bumpy ride. According to multiple reports, in the upcoming Captain America 3, Steve Rogers will be joined by another Avenger, and we're not talking about Hawkeye. This time, Tony Stark is getting in on the action.

While promoting his latest film, The Judge, Robert Downey Jr. has been dropping hints that he and Marvel are working on something big. When he appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman to discuss his post-Iron Man future he said, "I'm gonna do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still gonna be involved with Marvel, and there's gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen.”

He also sat down with Ellen DeGeneres and explained, “I know there's going to be more Marvel movies, and they have big ideas of how to do it best. We're in the middle of negotiations.”

Downey wasn't kidding about Marvel having "big ideas." Many believe his appearance in Captain America 3 will mark the beginning of Marvel's Civil War. For those who don't know, the Civil War was a popular arc in the comics that pit superhero against superhero. Most notably, the conflict eventually led to the death of Rogers' Captain America.

Downey isn't just filming a cameo for Captain America 3. The actor's expected to shoot a substantial amount of footage, making him a legit co-star. Following The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Stark is rumored to turn over a new leaf. After seeing the chaos caused by his creation, he starts to doubt the effectiveness of superheroes. Are they doing more harm than good? This puts him in direct opposition with Rogers and his beliefs.

Stark and Rogers have always viewed the world differently (for obvious reasons). But after Age of Ultron that will be more apparent than ever. We guess their confrontation in 2012's The Avengers was only a taste of what's to come.

Filming on Captain America 3 is slated to begin in early 2015.  The movie will open in theaters May 6, 2016.
