Rocket is ready for action in first footage from Guardians of the Galaxy animated series

After finally confirming that an animated series based on Guardians of the Galaxy is on the way, Disney has released the first test footage from the project. Not surprisingly, it looks awesome.

The clip focuses largely on Rocket Raccoon and Peter Quill/Star-Lord, and it gives us a feel for the animation style and tone we’ll likely see in the finished product. One thing’s for certain — it’s definitely modeled after the blockbuster film starring Marvel’s cosmic heroes, and the series will reportedly pick up immediately after the events of the film. Thanos will also “figure prominently” in the story.

The footage has a different aesthetic than Disney’s current slate of Marvel-inspired animated shows, which includes Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. The Guardians test footage has more of a technicolor, '80s-tinged pop to it — which works to great effect. Marvel has also teased that this series won't be "afraid to go deeper" with storylines, which has us hopeful for something that could cross over and actually be a solid show.

One thing we don’t know: If the series will actually connect to Disney XD’s universe of other Marvel shows. The Guardians have already popped up in a few cameos on those other properties, though that version of the team looked largely inspired by the comics, while the test footage here shows off a more movie-version look. That obviously doesn’t mean they won’t connect, and it’d stand to reason they will (synergy!), but if nothing else we’re glad to see Marvel investing in a unique style with this property.

Check out the pitch clip below:

The series is being handled by a who’s who of Marvel heavyweights, with executive producers Alan Fine (The Avengers, Iron Man), Dan Buckley (Avengers Assemble), Joe Quesada (Avengers Assemble) and Jeph Loeb (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.); co-executive producers Stan Lee, Eric Radomski (Spawn), Cort Lane (Ultimate Spider-Man) and Stephen Wacker (Avengers Assemble); supervising producers Marty Isenberg (Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters) and Harrison Wilcox (Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.); consulting producer Steven Melching (Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.); and supervising director Leo Riley (TRON: Uprising).

The Guardians animated series is currently slated to premiere on Disney XD in 2015.
