Tricia Helfer stars in first trailer for Syfy's ambitious new space opera Ascension

Ever since the series was picked up earlier this year, we’ve been itching to see some actual footage from Syfy’s new space opera, Ascension. Finally, the wait is over.

Ahead of the six-part limited series’ debut in November, the network has unveiled the first 30-second teaser trailer showing off some actual footage of the show. Up to this point, all we’ve seen is the mesmerizingly cool spec trailer setting up the Mad Men-meets-Battlestar Galactica-esque premise.

The first trailer gives us our first peek at the cast in action, including Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town) as the ship’s captain and Battlestar Galactica alum Tricia Helfer as his manipulative wife. The series is essentially a murder mystery set aboard a generational spaceship secretly launched in the 1960s to explore a distant planet.

The setup is this: In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.

The footage looks awesome, and definitely evokes some of the aesthetic we loved from Battlestar Galactica. Plus, the high-concept murder and mystery aspects seem to be an excellent jumping-off point if the show proves a hit and they want to keep it around a while (a la BSG).

The limited series Ascension premieres Nov. 24 on Syfy.
