Giger Bar

American fans of legendary Swiss artist H.R. Giger rejoice: His famous Giger Bar might finally be coming to the U.S. -- along with a sci-fi-themed hotel built to house it.

Giger, the hugely influential artist who created the groundbreaking biomechanical designs for the original Alien, has opened two Giger Bars in his native Switzerland: at the Chateau St. Germain in Gruyeres (where the Giger Museum is also located) and right in his hometown of Chur, Switzerland. The bars are utterly distinctive environments, with everything inside fashioned in the biomechanical style that is Giger's trademark.

No one, however, has tried opening a Giger Bar in the U.S. There was a Giger Room at the old Limelight nightclub in New York City, but it's long gone (I was there -- it wasn't all that). That's about as close as anyone has ever gotten -- until now.

According to Cnet, graphic designer Andy Davies is working with Giger to bring the Bar to the U.S. for the first time. But that's not all: Davies needs a hotel to house the Bar in -- so he's developing his own idea, the Sci-Fi Hotel, as well.

Davies says his hotel will be "an architectural and stylistic celebration of science fiction, a creative and technological showcase that features classic, retro, and futuristic science-fiction interior design, art, books, and movies in guestrooms and public spaces for a completely 'immersive' experience."

He added that the venue will include unique art and media installations, unusual rooms, a comprehensive library and all kinds of sci-fi entertainment and games available on demand.

As for the Giger Bar itself, Davies said:

"What I envision for the US bar is taking the key elements of Giger Bar Gruyeres, the biomechanical ceiling arches, and reforming them to fit a space here. Matching those design elements with the same style of furniture, the bar -- well, pretty much replicating the whole thing. The important thing for me is total authenticity. I want Giger and his team to be totally involved. This will be a Giger work of art, not just a copy, but the real thing. That's really important to H.R. Giger and to me."

There's no final decision yet on where Davies will build the Sci-Fi Hotel and Giger Bar -- and he's still looking for investors as well -- but he said that Seattle and New York are leading the pack, with San Francisco, New Orleans and Chicago rounding out his top five locations.

Could you see yourself making a special trip to stay at the Sci-Fi Hotel and drink at the Giger Bar? Is this something you'd like to see become a reality?
