Rumor of the Day: Marvel Phase 4 will bring New Avengers semi-reboot

We already know that Marvel likes to plan things out a decade or two in advance, and a new report indicates the upcoming Phase 4 could mean a whole new team of Avengers. Bye-bye, Robert Downey Jr.

The rumor comes via Unleash the Fanboy, and says Marvel is planning New Avengers as the flagship film of Phase 4. The movie would focus on new additions like Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Doctor Strange, and could possibly carry over some heroes from the first two phases (i.e. Captain America, Thor, Hulk). There's no mention of whether some existing roles might be recast.

Take it with a grain of salt at the moment, but it makes sense that Marvel will need to do something to shake things up by that point. The current actors will be getting older (i.e. Iron Man star Downey will be pushing his mid-50s, by that time and his new contract will be over), while the existing actors will be up to renegotiate for some massive pay increases, which could push the budget into the stratosphere.

Here’s what their alleged inside source at Disney had to say:

“It’s so incredibly early in the process, but unless Robert [Downey Jr.] makes an insane deal with these guys, they’re going with New Avengers.

Well, you’ve heard the recent casting announcements. They’ve got a ton of great guys. Paul Rudd. Michael Douglas. Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Whoever they choose for Doctor Strange and the other new guys in Phase 3. They’ve got a lot of great guys to lead the new phase of the team. But that’s all I say.  It’s really early.”

Though Downey has previously said he’s getting a bit tired of the never-ending string of Iron Man appearances, it wouldn’t be the first time Marvel backed a truck of cash up to his mansion to get him to stick around for a few more movies. So, stranger things have happened.

But it sounds like we could definitely be seeing a whole lot of fresh faces in the next few years. What do you think? Could the Marvel brand survive a massive New Avengers overhaul?
