Ant-Man makes the jump into a new release date

Ant-Man will trundle into movie theaters a little earlier than expected -- and we can thank two much larger superheroes for it.

Marvel has announced that its "mite"-iest hero will now arrive on the big screen on July 17, 2015, a full two weeks earlier than its original July 31 release date. July 17 just so happens to be the original release date for the untitled Batman/Superman movie, which recently got kicked to May 2016 so that the filmmakers have more time to fix all its problems make it the best movie it can be.

So now Marvel, not having any direct competition for the comic-book crowd on that date, decided to give its tiniest superhero a boost into a slightly more high-profile slot (ironically, that third weekend in July worked out pretty well for Chris Nolan's Dark Knight movies).

Production on the picture starts later this year, with director Edgar Wright (The World's End) behind the camera and in front of it, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym.

So that means that Marvel will have two big new movies out next summer -- The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man -- while DC (via Warner Bros.) will have, er, none.

I'm thrilled that we have to wait two weeks fewer to see Ant-Man -- how about you?
