Videogame writer explains why that God of War movie is so tricky

If that God of War movie's going to be good, it's got one big character hurdle to clear.

At least, that's what Marianne Krawcyzk -- the writer of the mega-hit videogame series -- thinks. Speaking at a panel yesterday at the PAX Prime expo in Seattle, Krawcyzk recalled loving Garfield comics as a child, and remembered getting very excited when the character made the transition to television. When she saw the show, though, she found that hearing Garfield's voice "completely threw" her, and she stopped watching. With that in mind, Krawcyzk's main worry about a God of War film is that the same phenomenon could apply to the game's protagonist, Kratos.

"And I think, if [Kratos] ever makes it to the big-screen, there will be that similar dissonance," she said. "The player has a personal experience with him, and then he's going to be embodied by a different actor, he's going to have a different voice, he's going to say a lot more words.

"So I think it will be hard to get that across," she added. "But I hope they will someday. We don't know."

We haven't heard anything new on the God of War movie front since last year, when it was announced that writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (who worked on the Saw franchise and Pacific Rim) had been hired to tackle the screenplay for Universal Pictures. We're still hoping to see Kratos kick ass on the big screen someday, but if Universal can't find the right people to nail the character and the story, we could have another Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on our hands.
