Sean Young wants fans to boycott Blade Runner sequel if she isn't asked to be in it

If you were hoping for Rachael the replicant to make a return in the new Blade Runner, both you and Sean Young seem to be out of luck.

Have you seen Blade Runner lately? It is still easily one of the best and most important science fiction films ever made. As if in purposeful contrast to Alien's sparse and silent setting, Ridley Scott filled every inch of Blade Runner's world. It's not easy to completely immerse an audience in a future world, but this one is so real and teeming with life that it feels effortless.

And among that lush world is Rachael as played by Sean Young. The journey she and Deckard take as they struggle against both each other and their Nexus-6 counterparts is unforgettable and really speaks to the human condition.

So you might think that Scott would want Young to return in some capacity now that a Blade Runner followup is on the table. But that, apparently, is not the case. And Young is really mad about it.

Alcon—they’re the ones that own it and apparently they have Ridley to direct it — and when I met with them they didn’t make any offer-plans to include me. And when I called Ridley Scott’s office, he doesn’t call me back. So I guess they’re going to go, like, prequel or…I don’t know what they’re going to do. But my official opinion is that, if they don’t include me in it, everybody should boycott it. Because it’s stupid not to have me in it. It’s really stupid. That’s my opinion! I mean, you try to tell people something sensible in Hollywood and sometimes they just don’t listen, you know. And they usually pay the price too, because everybody’s an expert.

It's a tricky situation. Rachael and Deckard are both replicants, so how could they be old? And is this a sequel or a prequel?

As to whether people will boycott, well, it's like this -- if they do, it'll happen because people don't want a Blade Runner sequel/prequel (especially after Prometheus) and not because of Sean Young's say-so.
