Little-known sci-fi fact: How Nick Fury (all 3 of him) got that eyepatch

Everybody knows that Nick Fury has an eyepatch, but not everyone knows why.

He may not be an actual superhero, but Nick Fury is still one of the baddest, toughest and most long-lived characters in the Marvel Universe. He doesn't always take top billing, but he's still the one most heroes come crawling to for help, and we're pretty sure that, like Batman, he could take down every single supe if he had to.

But when we think of Nick Fury, the first thing that comes to mind is "eyepatch."

And for a while, Fury just had the patch with zero explanations given. FInally, though, on Feb. 10, 1966, Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos #27 was released, promising to reveal the true story of Nick's infamous eyewear.

Thankfully, the entire comic is available here. We've pulled the important bits for you to peruse in our gallery. Here's a hint -- the story includes bazookas, grenades, borderline suicidal schemes and beating up Nazis.

In addition, we've also included Ultimate Nick Fury and Nick Fury Jr., both of whom also have eyepatches. Ultimate Fury got his in the Gulf War, and Jr. got his from a nasty scrape with Orion (right after he found out Fury was his father, no less).

The truth is, you can't really be Nick Fury without an eyepatch, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
