Rumor of the Day: Abrams WAY more involved in new Star Wars than we thought

J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII, but apparently he'll be doing a lot more than that.

We're not saying that directing one of the most hyped movies of the last quarter century is a small deal. On the contrary, it's absolutely huge. So we were surprised to hear this latest rumor. It seems that, in addition to making Episode VII, Abrams will be involved in just about everything else, too.

Taking a page from Marvel's Avengers/Joss Whedon playbook, rumor has it that Abrams "will supervise and consult all other side projects from the franchise -- games, spin-off movies, TV series etc. And while Kathleen Kennedy will be the managing core of the franchise Abrams will be the creative core through which everything will pass."

If this is true, then we imagine that this is why Abrams balked at taking the job and also where those rumors that he was quitting stem from.

What makes this different from the Whedon/Avengers situation is that Abrams is attached to both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. Needless to say, if this rumor is true, Abrams won't have any time for Star Trek at all. Which, depending on who you ask, may or may not be a good thing.

All that being said, we get the benefit of one overall creative voice driving the many incarnations that the Star Wars franchise will inhabit over the coming years. We just hope Abrams doesn't burn himself out. That way lies Jar-Jar-Binks-shaped madness.
