Rumor of the Day: [REDACTED] will show up for Who's 50th after all

Despite past denials, rumor has it one Doctor Who alum has indeed managed to return for the 50th anniversary.

A few months ago, several former Doctors -- Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy and Eighth Doctor Paul McGann -- claimed they would not be making appearances in this year's Who 50th-anniversary special, citing other commitments, change in physical appearance and an apparent lack of interest from the BBC. That seemed to set the stage for a special that would feature only two Doctors, David Tennant's Tenth and Matt Smith's Eleventh, but now it seems one of those former Doctors has been roped back in.

Bleeding Cool's Brendon Connelly has word on what he calls "very good authority" that McGann has, in fact, "filmed something" for the 50th anniversary. What that something might be is still unclear, though Connelly does note a past rumor that McGann would show up in a "minisode prologue" to the 50th anniversary that would reveal McGann's Doctor regenerating into the mysterious Doctor form played by John Hurt at the end of last season. Since we have heard that Hurt's Doctor is a "past Doctor" who will apparently help to fill the nine-year gap between the appearance of McGann's Doctor in 1996 and Christopher Eccleston's Doctor in 2005, that seems like a very plausible explanation for McGann's involvement. But is it true?

Well, given that we're talking about a special engineered by Who showrunner Steven Moffat, there's a good bet we won't know for sure until he wants us to. The good news, though, is that we've only got a short wait until the 50th-anniversary special is upon us.

What do you think? Will McGann really make his second appearance as the Doctor this fall?
