Matt Damon gets sarcastic with a robot in first clip from Elysium

ELYSIUM - Official Movie Clip #1 (2013) [HD]

Life is rough for the people of Earth in District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's Elysium.

Not only do they have to live a downtrodden life on an overpopulated, wrecked planet while the rich live in ultra-luxury on board the film's titular space station, but they also have to deal with a robot-filled bureaucracy if they want to get anything done.

That's what happens to Max (Matt Damon) in this, the first clip released from the film. A former car thief out on parole, Max has to explain a "misunderstanding" to a robotic parole officer who doesn't want to hear his excuses. Though this clip has none of the action that the trailers for the film have promised, it does offer us a very clear insight into who Max is, what life is like for Earth's lower-class, and what Max is dealing with before all the film's action really starts.

Elysium hits theaters August 9. Here's the official synopsis:

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
