Caesar ain't happy in first Dawn of the Planet of the Apes image

The apes are back, and they look ready for a fight.

First, we got a few bits of viral marketing warning of the deadly "Simian Flu," and now we see the other half of the equation that could end humanity. Twentieth Century Fox released the above image after its big Comic-Con movie panel over the weekend, featuring lead ape Caesar (Andy Serkis) surrounded by his ever-growing force of advanced apes. In one hand he's got a weapon, and the other hand is raised as if in anticipation. Is he ready to charge?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the second installment in the rebooted Apes continuity that began with the 2011 hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, is directed by Matt Reeves (Let Me In) from a screenplay by Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, as well as Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Mark Bomback (The Wolverine). In addition to Serkis, the cast includes Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty), Keri Russell (The Americans), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Judy Greer (Archer). Here's the official synopsis:

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters July 18, 2014.
