1st casting news (plus 2 new clips) for Ron Moore's Syfy series Helix

The cast for Ronald D. Moore’s Helix is starting to come together, and now the Syfy series has added a sci-fi vet to take the lead role.

Billy Campbell (The 4400, The Rocketeer) has signed on to play Dr. Alan Farragut, “an emotionally troubled Centers for Disease Control pathologist whose marriage has recently fallen apart after his wife had an affair with his brother,” according to TV Guide.

If Campbell looks familiar, that’s because he’s best known for his role of Jordan Collier on the long-running USA sci-fi series The 4400. He was one of the best things about the show, and is a stellar character actor.

The series doesn’t premiere until January 2014, but the network is expected to show off some new goodies at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. The show focuses on an arctic research base that could hold the fate of humanity. It also has some freaky black ooze — and seems to have a major The Thing vibe.

Two new teaser clips have also been released, showing off something freaky sneaking around in an air vent, and a very creepy decontamination chamber:
