New Yorkers, you better watch out: The Sharknado is coming for you next.
The low-budget Syfy flick Sharknado created a social media zeitgeist when it premiered earlier this month, and now the network has confirmed that a sequel is in the works. Not much is known about the followup, though the network has revealed that the setting will shift to New York — meaning we better get some shark insanity in Times Square. Please.
The original flick starred Tara Reid (American Pie) and Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210) and was framed around the concept of a giant tornado full of sharks coming inland and wreaking havoc. As the poster put it: Enough said.
Most of Hollywood got in on the fun during the original’s premiere, pitching ideas and catchphrases via Twitter (at one point there were 5,000 Sharknado tweets per minute). Let's just hope Damon Lindelof wasn’t kidding when he said he wanted to write the sequel.
In announcing the project, Syfy EVP Thomas Vitale teased TV Line there will be more details soon:
“Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”
To help name the sequel, the network is asking for submissions from fans via Twitter. If you have any ideas, just tweet your suggestion to @SyfyMovies using the #Sharknado hashtag. The best one will become the official sequel title.
